The History

In the 1880s, Senator Francis G. Newlands of Nevada and his partners began acquiring farmland in this unincorporated area ofhomes in chevy chase Maryland and just inside the District of Columbia, for the purpose of developing a suburban community relying on residential streetcars during the expansion of the Washington DC streetcar system. The Chevy Chase Land Company was founded in 1890, and its holdings of more than 1,700 acres (6.9 km eventually extended along the present-day Connecticut Avenue from Florida Avenue north to Jones Bridge Road. Martin’s Addition is one of the historic neighborhoods located in the area. It is an acquisition made to the area by Harry Martin. He was born in Washington DC in 1865, one of eight children born to James Martin. Martin’s real estate career began in a company he owned with his brothers in the 1890’s.
