Levain, One of the Most Famous Cookie Shops in Bethesda

Levain,  the New York cookie store, has an outpost on Bethesda Avenue close to the Apple Store and Lululemon.    According to theCookie Shops in Bethesda Levain website, Pam Weekes and Connie McDonald created Levain Bakery in 1995, out of their passions for food, friendship, and hard work. One day, they created an ultimate chocolate chip walnut cookie to give them energy while training for a triathlon and a new business of cookies was created.   In Bethesda levain sells dark chocolate chip cookies, walnut chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal raisin, two chip chocolate chip cookies, dark chocolate peanut chip, and caramel coconut chocolate chip.

These cookies are BIG – weighing in at about 6 ounces – so come hungry!  They also have vegan and gluten free cookies in addition to breads, pastries, brioche and loaf cakes like lemon or pumpkin spice.

Chip City Cookies

Chip City Cookies is the newest addition to Bethesda’s cookies wars.  Located at 4939 Elm Street, it is just a block from Levain.  Chip City’s Cookies are slightly smaller than Levain’s, but still a hefty 5.5 ounces each!   Chip City has over 40 varieties on its website, ranging from butterscotch toffee to chocolate peppermint crinkle to horchata and red velvet cheesecake.   Chip City Cookies comes with a big following from New York and is a welcomed addition to the cookie shops in Bethesda.

Georgetown Cupcakes

Georgetown Cupcake is also on Bethesda Avenue at 4834, just in case the cookies at Levain aren’t enough or you want a change from the cookie shops in Bethesda. cookie shops in Bethesda Inspired by their grandmother, Katherine and Sophie opened Georgetown Cupcake on Valentine’s Day 2008 in Washington, DC. Over the past 15 years, Katherine and Sophie have made Georgetown Cupcake’s DC flagship bakery a destination for cupcake lovers across the globe. With a menu of over 100 different flavors, Georgetown Cupcake ships its cupcakes nationwide.  Georgetown Cupcake is in full holiday swing with flavors like sticky toffee pudding and gingerbread cheesecake!   The pink boxes are almost as iconic as Tiffany’s blue boxes but the contents are less expensive.  Georgetown Cupcake is great about delivering to college dorms, creating special celebrations for birthdays and exam week!

LaDuree – a Different Kind of Cookie

Ladurée at 4808 Bethesda Avenue is a store selling colorful French macaroons in all sorts of flavors.  This store is definitely different than the other cookie shops in Bethesda since it specializes in macaroons, teas and   Imagine a macaroon that tastes like cotton candy or Christmas biscuit macaroon.  How could you pass up a Marie Antoinette tea or black currant violet? Perhaps you would prefer a rose or lemon?  As the store itself says, “The only way to discover your favorite one is to taste it all.” If you are looking for a perfect place for a cup of tea and an afternoon treat of a glorious macaroon, then you definitely need to visit  Ladurée.

You will feel like you have stepped in to a tiny jewel box or a Parisian tea room when you go to Ladurée at 4808 Bethesda Avenue, just a short walk from the Darcy condos.  If you don’t feel like a macaroon, you might try a Eugenie, a crunchy chocolate shell, a melting heart, and a crispy shortbread. Flavors: pistachio, dark chocolate, salted caramel, vanilla, blackcurrant, marie antoinette, rose petal, or orange blossom.
