I’ve always believed that one of the best things about living in Bethesda isn’t just the beautiful homes or the wonderful restaurants—it’s the sense of community. There always seems to be something happening, and the best events are often the simplest.
This July marks the 20th anniversary of Bethesda Outdoor Movies, one of those summer traditions that reminds you why people fall in love with this town. Imagine spreading out a blanket or unfolding your favorite lawn chair as the sun sets, chatting with friends and neighbors, and settling in for free movies under the stars. It doesn’t get much better than that.
This year’s lineup has something for just about everyone. Ocean’s 8 kicks things off on Saturday, July 25, followed by the Oscar-winning La La Land on Friday, July 31, and the always-entertaining Bring It On on Friday, August 7. All three movies under the stars begin at 8:45 p.m. in the Montgomery County parking lot behind the Women’s Farm Market at 4650 Willow Lane.
One thing I especially love about this event is that it gives you the perfect excuse to make an evening of it. Start with dinner at one of Bethesda’s wonderful restaurants, stop for ice cream (because calories consumed while walking to movies under the stars don’t count—that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it), then wander over with your blanket or your camp chairs just as the stars begin to appear.
After almost forty years selling homes in Bethesda, I’ve learned that buyers aren’t just purchasing square footage. They’re buying Saturday nights like this. They’re buying neighborhoods where people gather, children dance in front of the screen before the movie begins, and friends bump into each other while waiting for the opening credits.
Those are the things that never show up on a listing sheet, but they often become the reasons people never want to leave.
If you’re thinking about making Bethesda your home—or wondering which neighborhood might fit your lifestyle best—I’d be delighted to show you around. After all, finding the right house is important, but finding the right community is what truly makes a place feel like home.
After 38 years helping people buy and sell homes in Bethesda, I can tell you that the best things about this community rarely appear in a listing description. They are found on walking trails, at farmers markets, in neighborhood restaurants, and in the everyday moments that make a house feel like home.
