The End of DC’s Dan Snyder Saga – Sort of

This post is written by LIse Howe, Associate Broker with RLAH RE LLC in Chevy Chase MD.  I love matching people with the perfect home whether it is a trophy property in Potomac or a first home in North West DC!  As a nearly native DC resident, I am familiar with lots of different parts of the DC metro area and all the opportunities available for a good real estate decision!

Dan Snyder has severed his ties with Washington.  If you’ve lived in the DC area long enough, you know that some real‑estate stories take on a life of their own. And Dan Snyder’s long‑listed Potomac estate? That one had more chapters than a Netflix series. After years on and off the market, a price tag that once flirted with $49 million, and enough local gossip to fuel a dozen dinner parties, Dan Snyder’s saga finally reached its grand finale—in a Manhattan ballroom, naturally.

Picture it: a December night at the Pendry Manhattan West. A bejeweled crowd. An auctioneer with a silver goatee and the stamina of someone who’s definitely sold a castle or two. And on the block? A French‑chateau‑inspired Potomac estate once owned by Dan Snyder himself on land that previously belonged to the King of Jordan —13 acres, 25,000 square feet, a guesthouse with 11 garage bays, and a staff residence big enough to qualify as its own ZIP code.

After years of no takers, the American Cancer Society—who received the property from Dan Snyder as a donation—decided to let Concierge Auctions work its magic. And if there’s one thing luxury auctions do well, it’s creating urgency. (Trust me, after nearly four decades in this market, I’ve seen urgency work miracles.)

The bidding opened at $2.5 million. Yes, you read that correctly. Then things escalated quickly: $4.5 million, $7.5 million, $8 million, $11 million—mostly from remote bidders phoning in like they were ordering takeout. After 28 suspenseful minutes, the gavel finally fell at $11.84 million (or $13.26 million with the buyer’s premium). Not exactly the $49 million once envisioned, but enough to close the book on one of Potomac’s most talked‑about listings.  Click here is you want to see the photos!

And here’s the kicker: several would‑be buyers reached out after the auction, lamenting that they hadn’t jumped in. In real estate, regret is real—and it’s usually expensive.

What This Means for You

As someone who has spent 38 years helping clients navigate the Potomac and DC luxury markets, I can tell you this: distinctive homes and trophy properties don’t vanish with one headline‑grabbing sale. Dan Snyder’s estate may be gone, but Potomac is still full of extraordinary opportunities—architectural gems, private compounds, river‑view estates, and homes with stories just waiting for their next chapter.  Click here to see what luxury homes are on the market in Potomac right now.

If you’re looking for something remarkable—whether it’s a turnkey masterpiece or a grand estate ready for reinvention—there are still plenty of exceptional options out there. And I know exactly where to find them.

Whenever you’re ready to explore the next great opportunity, I’m here with the keys.
