The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair returns August 14–22, 2026, and if you’ve never been, you’re missing one of the best traditions in Montgomery County.
After selling homes for more years than I care to admit to in Bethesda, Chevy Chase, Potomac and throughout Montgomery County, I’ve learned something important: the best part of living here isn’t just the beautiful neighborhoods. It’s the traditions that bring everyone together. The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair is one of those traditions – and one of my favorites!
I’ve been to the Fair many times over the years, and every visit reminds me why I love living here. One minute you’re watching 4-H students proudly showing the cows they’ve spent months raising. The next you’re admiring rabbits with ears so enormous they hardly seem real. Then somehow you’ve found yourself eating a funnel cake the size of a steering wheel while debating whether you still have room for fried Oreos.
(For the record…you always find room.)
This year’s theme, “Barn in the USA,” celebrates America’s 250th birthday, and the Fair promises nine days packed with agriculture, entertainment, rides, food, competitions and plenty of memories for families of every age.
More Than a Fair—It’s a Celebration of Montgomery County
The Montgomery County Agricultural Fair has been part of our community since 1949 and remains one of Maryland’s largest county fairs. While many people come for the carnival rides or the famous fair food, I’ve always loved that agriculture remains the heart of the event. Watching local 4-H children confidently lead their cows, sheep, goats and pigs into the show ring is something you don’t forget. Their dedication is remarkable, and it’s wonderful seeing young people so passionate about caring for animals and preserving our agricultural traditions. And then there are the rabbits. Every year I stop to admire the giant rabbits with ears that seem almost bigger than the rabbits themselves. They never disappoint! I have to tell myself every year that I don’t need a rabbit!
Yes…You Should Absolutely Eat the Fair Food
No one goes to the Fair to count calories. This is your chance to enjoy everything that makes county fairs famous.
Fresh Amish-style donuts.
Giant grilled cheese sandwiches.
Corn dogs.
Fresh squeezed lemonade.
Cotton candy.
Funnel cakes dusted with enough powdered sugar to coat your entire shirt.
Deep-fried candy bars.
And if you’ve never experienced fair food before, consider this your official permission to indulge for one day.
One of my personal favorites is simply wandering through the food vendors and deciding what smells too good to pass up.
Rides for Every Age
Whether you’re bringing toddlers, teenagers or adventurous adults, there is something for everyone. Little ones love the carousel, trains and classic children’s rides, while thrill seekers can enjoy everything from the Ferris Wheel to spinning rides that make you question your life choices. Even if you don’t ride a single attraction, watching the lights come alive after sunset is worth staying for.
My Favorite Event? The Demolition Derby
If you’ve never watched a demolition derby, prepare yourself. There’s something oddly satisfying about watching old cars crash into one another until only one remains moving. It’s loud! It’s chaotic. It’s completely ridiculous! It’s a perfect place to take small boys – and small girls! (I remember taking my son to a demolition derby when he was about 10 and he was mesmerized by it!) Maybe that’s why it’s become one of my favorite Fair traditions.
Don’t judge me until you’ve seen it.

Beyond the rides, the Fair offers a full schedule of entertainment including:

- Swine races
- Comedy shows
- Live music
- Chainsaw carving demonstrations
- Stilt walkers
- Family entertainment throughout the grounds
There truly is something happening around every corner.

The Montgomery County Fairgrounds are located at:

The Fairgrounds are just off I-270 and are easy to reach from anywhere in Montgomery County, Washington DC and Northern Virginia.
Parking is available onsite for a fee, but if you’d rather skip traffic, free shuttle buses run from Montgomery College’s Rockville and Germantown campuses throughout the Fair.
Helpful Tips Before You Go
Arrive early if you’re visiting on the weekend.
Wear comfortable walking shoes—you’ll cover far more ground than you expect.
Bring sunscreen, especially if you’re planning to spend time watching livestock competitions.
Stay into the evening. The Fair takes on an entirely different atmosphere once the lights come on.
And don’t try to do everything in one visit. The Fairgrounds cover more than 60 acres, so it’s perfectly fine to wander, discover something unexpected and simply enjoy the day.
Why I Love the Montgomery County Fair
As a Realtor, I’m often asked what makes Montgomery County such a wonderful place to live.
Events like this are part of the answer.
The Fair isn’t just about carnival rides or funnel cakes. It’s about community. It’s about families making memories together. It’s about celebrating the farming heritage that still exists alongside our thriving suburbs. It’s about children seeing where food comes from, meeting farm animals up close, cheering at a demolition derby, and ending the night watching the Ferris Wheel light up the sky. Those are the moments people remember.
If you’re looking for a fun family outing this August—or you’ve never experienced the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair before—I highly recommend putting it on your calendar. Just don’t blame me if you leave carrying a giant stuffed animal, powdered sugar on your shirt and a bag of fresh donuts for the ride home. I’ve done it more than once.
