Whitman HS – Why You Want to Relocate There!
Walt Whitman High School is a public high school located in Bethesda MD. It is named after the 19th-century American poet Walt Whitman. The school serves grades 9-12 for the Montgomery County public school system.
The school opened in the fall of 1962 with 1,418 students. Designed by local architectural firm McLeod, Ferrara & Ensign, it was built on 17 levels, with a central courtyard and a noteworthy geodesic dome for its gymnasium. (It was fun to fly over Bethesda on your way home and look out an airplane window and see the dome. You knew exactly where you were!)
The school was rebuilt from 1992-1993 and the landmark geodesic dome sadly was lost to history! The school expanded in 2021 with a 75,000 sq ft addition, including 18 new classrooms.
Whitman students average a score of 1312 on the SAT, averaging 654 on the verbal section and 659 on the math section. As of 2024, Whitman is the 2nd-ranked high school in Maryland and the 139th-ranked nationwide, according to U.S News and World Report. (Sometimes Churchill or Walter Johnson may rank higher, but Whitman is never far from the top.)
Walt Whitman High School primarily serves students in Bethesda but also small numbers of students in Potomac and Glen Echo. One middle school and five elementary schools feed into Whitman HS.
