After nearly forty years helping buyers find the right home in Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Northwest Washington, I’ve learned that choosing a condominium isn’t just about loving the view from the balcony or admiring a beautifully renovated kitchen. Those things are certainly nice—but they aren’t what determine whether you’ll still be happy living there ten years from now.
When someone tells me they’re looking for a lock-and-leave lifestyle, I immediately begin evaluating the building itself. Here are the five things I consider before I recommend any condominium to my clients.
Is the Building Financially Healthy?
This may not sound exciting, but it can save buyers thousands of dollars. I always review the condominium association’s financial statements, reserve funds and history of special assessments whenever possible. A well-funded reserve account tells me the board is planning for the future instead of reacting to expensive surprises.
