The Elizabeth Condos in Chevy Chase MD: Perfect for Car-Light Living

If you are thinking about giving up your house—and possibly giving up some of the driving that goes with it—The Elizabeth deserves a place near the top of your list.  Located at 4601 North Park Avenue in Friendship Heights, The Elizabeth offers something that can be surprisingly difficult to find: generously sized, light-filled condos in a full-service building where you can manage everyday life without getting into a car.

You can walk to the Metro, buy groceries, meet friends for lunch, pick up a bottle of wine, go to the gym and even swim indoors without leaving the neighborhood. When you do want to venture farther, the Red Line can take you directly into Washington for museums, theaters, restaurants, sporting events and appointments.  For downsizers, frequent travelers and anyone who would rather spend less time behind the wheel, that combination is very appealing.

Can You Live at The Elizabeth Without a Car?

Yes—and that is one of the building’s strongest selling points.

The Elizabeth is within walking distance of the Friendship Heights Metro station on the Red Line. From there, residents can travel downtown for a performance, visit the Smithsonian museums, meet friends for dinner or continue to Union Station without worrying about traffic or parking.

Friendship Heights also offers multiple bus routes, neighborhood transportation and easy access to taxis and rideshare services. You may still choose to keep a car—and many residences have access to garage parking—but you do not need to use it for every small errand.

That freedom becomes increasingly valuable for buyers who no longer enjoy driving, couples hoping to manage with one car or downsizers planning ahead for the years when driving may be less convenient.

Groceries, Restaurants and Shopping Within Walking Distance

One of the great luxuries of living at The Elizabeth is being able to walk to the grocery store.

Whole Foods Market is nearby, and Trader Joe’s has a Friendship Heights location. Residents also have access to neighborhood restaurants, cafés, carryout choices and newer dining options around Wisconsin Avenue.

This is the kind of location where you can decide at 4:30 that you would like salmon for dinner, walk to the store and be home before you would have found a parking space in many parts of Washington.

The neighborhood also offers useful retail destinations, including Total Wine & More and a Brooks Brothers location. The retail landscape in Friendship Heights continues to change and evolve, but the essential advantage remains: an unusually large number of services are concentrated within a relatively small, walkable area.

Spacious Condos With Plenty of Natural Light

Many buyers begin their downsizing search assuming that moving to a condominium means squeezing themselves and everything they own into a tiny apartment. That does not have to be the case at The Elizabeth.

The building includes one-, two- and three-bedroom floor plans, and many of the residences are quite spacious by newer-condo standards. Large windows bring in abundant natural light, while generous living and dining rooms provide enough space for real furniture.

That last point matters. Downsizing does not necessarily mean giving up the dining table where your family gathers or the comfortable sofa everyone gravitates toward. It means choosing the pieces you truly love and finding a home where they still fit.

The Elizabeth was built in the 1970s, when condominium floor plans often included larger rooms, substantial closets and more separation between living spaces. Individual residences have been updated to very different degrees, so buyers may find everything from a beautifully renovated, move-in-ready home to an opportunity to create exactly what they want.

Full-Service Living Without Feeling Fussy

The Elizabeth is a full-service condominium with a staffed front desk, professional management and on-site maintenance. That daily support can make an enormous difference, particularly for downsizers and residents who travel frequently.

If something needs attention, having maintenance staff in the building can mean a faster and simpler repair. If you are away, the front desk adds another reassuring layer of oversight. Packages are not sitting unattended on a front porch, and someone is there to notice when something seems amiss.

The building also offers an indoor swimming pool, fitness facilities, a sauna, resident gathering spaces and a library. An indoor pool is a particularly nice feature because it is useful all year—not merely during the three months when Washington weather decides to cooperate. The Village of Friendship Heights describes The Elizabeth as a pet-friendly high-rise offering one- through three-bedroom residences near the Metro. Learn more about The Elizabeth from the Village.

A Good Choice for Downsizers and Lock-and-Leave Buyers

The Elizabeth works particularly well for people who want fewer household responsibilities without giving up space, convenience or a sense of community.

There is no lawn to mow, no roof to replace on your own and no driveway to shovel. The front desk, on-site management and maintenance team help make the building a comfortable lock-and-leave option for residents who travel or divide their time between more than one home.

At the same time, you are not isolated. You can walk downstairs, greet the front desk staff, head to the pool or gym, run an errand and see familiar faces along the way.

That balance—privacy inside your own residence and connection just beyond your door—is one of the reasons established condominium buildings can work so well for downsizers.

Well-Priced Condos in Chevy Chase

The Elizabeth often represents a compelling value compared with newer luxury condominiums in Bethesda and Chevy Chase. Buyers may be able to purchase considerably more interior space for their money while still enjoying a full-service building and a highly walkable location.

Of course, the purchase price is only one part of the calculation. Condo fees, parking, renovations and the services included in the monthly fee must all be considered. Every unit is also different. Views, exposure, floor plan, condition, balcony and parking can significantly affect value.

This is where it helps to work with an agent who knows both the building and the surrounding condo market. A less expensive unit may be a wonderful opportunity—or it may need enough work that a renovated residence is ultimately the better value.

The B-CC School Cluster

The Elizabeth is currently associated with the Bethesda-Chevy Chase school cluster. Recent property information identifies Somerset Elementary School, Westland Middle School and Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, but school assignments can change and should always be confirmed directly through the Montgomery County Public Schools assignment tool.

Although many buyers at The Elizabeth are downsizers, the larger floor plans and school cluster can also make the building appealing to families who want space, Metro access and a Chevy Chase address without the maintenance demands of a detached home.

Lise’s Tip

Do not judge a condo at The Elizabeth by square footage alone.

Pay close attention to the unit’s exposure, natural light, view, floor plan and level of renovation. Two residences with similar square footage can feel entirely different. I also recommend reviewing exactly what is included in the condo fee, whether parking conveys with the unit and whether any planned building projects or assessments could affect your budget.

Most importantly, walk the neighborhood as though you already live there. Go from the building to Metro, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s and a restaurant you would actually use. A map can tell you that something is nearby, but the walk tells you whether the location will truly work for your everyday life.

Is The Elizabeth Right for You?

The Elizabeth may be an excellent fit if you want a spacious condo, abundant natural light, a helpful front desk, on-site maintenance and amenities that you will genuinely use. It is especially appealing if you want to drive less—or stop driving altogether—without feeling cut off from Washington.

After 38 years in real estate and many years helping buyers compare condos throughout Bethesda, Chevy Chase and Friendship Heights, I know that the right building is about much more than a pretty lobby. It is about how comfortably the building supports the life you want to live.

If you are considering buying or selling at The Elizabeth, I would be happy to help you compare floor plans, recent sales, condo fees, renovation levels and other nearby buildings. Contact me at lise@lisehowe.com to begin the conversation.
