The school was built in the early 1960s as Bethesda began to grow and it opened in the fall of 1962 with 1,418 students. Whitman High School was designed on 17 levels with a center courtyard by a local architect Anthony Ferrara.  Its most distinctive feature was a geodesic dome, which served as its gymnasium and made a distinctive landmark from the air for passengers flying into DC’s National Airport as they came down the Potomac River.

During the first school year, Broadway composer and lyricist Meredith Willson visited the school to assist with the production of The Music Man, which he had created. In 1981, a 1,176-seat auditorium was added to the school. In 1992, the geodesic dome and all other buildings except for the auditorium were demolished and construction began on a new school building, which opened in fall 1993.

Walt Whitman High School has sixteen sports teams including boys and girls basketball teams.  The basketball season starts in early December, so if you want to check out the Walt Whitman basketball schedule for the boys and girls teams, here it is.
